A flood happens when water covers land that is normally dry. Floods are the most common natural disaster in the world! They can happen when heavy rain falls for days, when rivers overflow their banks, when snow melts too fast in spring, when big storms push sea water onto the coast, or when a dam breaks.
The scariest kind is a flash flood — a flood that arrives in a flash, sometimes within minutes of a heavy downpour. Water rushes through streets and valleys faster than people expect, which is why the rule is: never walk or drive through flood water!

🏞️ Floods can be helpful?!
Believe it or not, some floods are good news! For thousands of years, the Nile River in Egypt flooded every year, leaving behind rich, dark mud that made farmland super fertile. Ancient Egyptian farmers planned their whole calendar around the flood. The trouble comes when floods are too big, too fast, or hit places where people live.
📜 A bit of history
People have told flood stories for thousands of years — from the story of Noah's Ark to ancient tales from Mesopotamia about a hero named Utnapishtim who built a great boat. These stories show that floods have always been part of human life.
